As proud members of the British Crown Green Bowling Association, we uphold the highest standards of the game.
While the bowling season spans from March to September, the green remains off-limits during the winter months for maintenance and protection.
Our History
History indicates that it was once part of the Lyme estate and now sits within the grounds of the Rams Head public house and restaurant, which opened its doors in 1883. Back then, it served as a popular stop for wagonette parties journeying along the Manchester to Buxton trail. The verdant green surrounding it witnessed lively picnics and frequent games of croquet, billiards, and bowling.
The annals of history reveal the formation of the Disley bowling club in 1888. In those early days, the smaller green saw bustling activity, with friendly matches and spirited competitions against neighbouring teams like Denton, Marple, New Mills, Hazel Grove, and Oldham. While the records remain silent about club activities during World War I, bowling persisted through the tumult of World War II.
In 1963, a significant milestone was reached as the club entered the North Derbyshire National League, adopting the moniker Rams Head Bowling Club. Subsequently, in 1968, a move to the larger green paved the way for the creation of the Rams Head Ladies Bowling Club.
With time, the club flourished, expanding its reach into the Buxton and Stockport League. The year 1988 marked a momentous occasion—the centenary celebration of the club's establishment. By 1991, they had joined the North Derbyshire Veterans League, clinching victory in consecutive seasons from 1991 to 1997
In 2013, a new chapter unfolded as they joined the Alderley league, maintaining active participation in all these esteemed leagues. Finally, in 2021, a significant development occurred as the ladies' and gentlemen's clubs merged into one, fostering unity and camaraderie within the bowling community.
Today, boasting a vibrant membership of 78 individuals encompassing both social and competitive bowlers, the club remains steadfast in its commitment to welcoming new members. Regular social competitions and engaging events like "Bowling Butty Saturdays" serve as avenues to perpetuate the joy of bowling and ensure the club's enduring legacy.
